What ‘Climate Controlled’ Really Means for Your Storage

by | Oct 14, 2020 | Storage | 2 comments

If you’ve ever rented storage or are thinking about it, I’m sure you’ve heard the term climate controlled come up.

But, what does “climate controlled” really mean, and why should it matter to you? When it comes to storage, climate-controlled means that the temperature and humidity of your storage space will be controlled to stay at a consistent level. This is especially important if you live in Canada where there are extreme fluctuations in the climate; with temperatures well below freezing in the winter, and intense periods of heat and humidity in the summer. Climate control ensures that your valuable belongings aren’t damaged by cold, heat, and humidity.

When it comes to the stuff you’re storing, there are some items that are not climate sensitive. Like plastic or outdoor furniture, yard tools or lawnmowers, some metal furniture, and dishes. But, the majority of your belongings can easily be damaged by heat, cold, and humidity, causing mold, mildew, fading, warping, corrosion, and melting, to name a few.

Items that should be stored in climate-controlled storage include:

  • Paper items like books, important files, and documents
  • Sentimental items of value (including photos)
  • Medical supplies or medications
  • Fabric items like clothing, blankets, winter duvets
  • Fabric or upholstered furniture
  • Anything made of wood
  • Items or furniture made of leather
  • Mattresses
  • Baby items like strollers, cribs, bassinettes
  • Musical instruments
  • Electronics (televisions, computers, speakers, blu-rays, DVDs, games, etc.)
  • Appliances
  • Cosmetics and toiletries
  • Collectibles like artwork, wine, antiques, vinyl records
  • Antique vehicles

If you choose to store these items in a traditional or non-climate-controlled space, you will most likely find them a mess when you are ready to take them out of storage. However, when you store with StoFlyte, every unit is climate controlled to protect your prized possessions. With insulated walls, programmable thermostats, and double doors, your treasured belongings will be safe from damage.
